What We Want To Believe

Sometimes a lie is so believable that it makes a fool out of a lot of people.  You’ve probably joined me in repeating a lie (or forwarding an email lie) because it seemed credible to you, only to have a friend direct you to

I’ve found that the best lies get retold because not only do they “seem” true, they make sense to us based upon our perception of life experiences.  For instance:

I keep getting forwarded emails that encourage me to refuse the new “golden dollar coins”… because they do not say “In God We Trust” on them.

The emails claim that “liberals”, “Muslims”, “secular humanists”, and or “the Jews” (depending on the version) have been trying to eliminate God from our lives for years, and now that Barak Osama has been elected president, they’ve finally begun the next phase of their devious plan.

The removal of “God” from our money.

Individuals frustrated by the fading homogeny of our culture are quick to use the absence of “In God We Trust” from the face of the golden dollar coin to point out that “They’ve been right” all of these years, and now “the unthinkable has happened!”.

The only problem is that careful inspection of the coin reveals that our government has gone to the added expense of inscribing “In God We Trust” onto the outer edge of each and every golden dollar coin in circulation.

The email, trumpeting the righteous indignation of the true believer, also remains in circulation.  It’s an embarrassing reminder of how easy it is to manipulate people into believing something that they already want to believe.

Like the lie that Taco Bell meat isn’t really meat.

Dole-ing Out The Good Stuff

There are some things in life that I’m willing to travel a great distance to overpay for.

While the list of things isn’t long, it does include a very special frozen delight, found in only a handful of places in the world.

If you’ve never experienced the extreme goodness that is “Dole Whip”, then you my friend are missing out on one of the best parts of a sun-filled vacation.

Dole Whip is a pineapple soft serve offered at only two locations outside the Dole Plantation in Oahu; at Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida.

I know what you West Coasters are thinking,

“If it’s so good, how could I have been to Disneyland so many times and missed it?”

My answer is relatively simple,

“You think that you’re walking past the line for the Not So “Enchanted Tiki Room”.

You see, at Disneyland the Dole Whip is located inside the waiting area for the Tiki Room. Since no returning visitor has purposefully gone into the Tiki Room since 1978, the waiting area is usually vacant… except for a long, single-file line that extends from the Dole Whip cash register, out into Adventure Land.

It’s an easy mistake to make, when you cross the bridge into Adventure Land you’re usually dead set on getting to the Indiana Jones queue. Since the Tiki Room hasn’t been updated since Magnum PI was on the air, your first instinct is to blow past the area.

But let me ask you a question,

“When was the last time you saw a long line of wait-ers that didn’t lead to something really good?”

(Twilight Movies excluded for obvious reasons.)

If you do join the line of Dole Whip wait-ers, you’ll notice two things:

Hold Onto Your Cookies!

It’s getting to be that wonderful time of year when darling little girls, diligently guarded by overly stern mothers, begin knocking on doors and setting up shop in front of discount super centers across the nation.

It’s Girl Scout Cookie time people.

That’s right, whether your seasonal jones is for Peanut Butter Tagalongs, Samoas, Do-Si-Dos, or wait for it…THIN MINTS, we are once again about to enter a new year filled will delectable temptations, destined to derail our new years resolutions.

And this year the Girl Scouts are bringing the heat high and inside…

Yesterday I was informed that there will be a new addition to the Girl Scout line up of cookies this year.
