Outleading Our Inevitable Failure

I’ve had a terrible experience at Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theater.

Having no children of my own, I’ve spent very little time inside of one of Mr. Cheese’s establishments.  I do however have several nieces and nephews who happen to fit squarely into Chuck E’s target demographic.  Because adult birthday parties usually define the word terrible for children, my 32nd birthday was spent in what can best be described as a skeeball and pizza induced stupor. That was the fun part.

The terrible part happened about an hour before closing.

Approved Workmen

Sometimes you hear something so often that you begin to believe it… whether or not it’s true.

While that sounds like a great opening line for disagreeing with the artistic supremacy of Vampire Weekend or the commercial appeal of Steve Buscemi, those targets are just too easy. I’m taking on the 1960’s.

When you think Peace and Love you don’t just think of the 1960’s, you actually see Volkswagen vans and love beads in your metaphysical mind’s eye don’t you. I think that’s all garbage. In my opinion, the ’60’s get the credit for bringing the world together when all it really did was the come up with idea.  Don’t get me wrong, the ’60’s wanted to buy the world a Coke, but it didn’t exactly get up off it’s afghan blanket and reach for it’s wallet.

The 1970’s bought the world a Coke.

It’s probably Time/Life magazine’s fault, but we’ve fallen under the spell of the decade that came up with the idea as we laugh at the decade that did all of the work.

All Too Easy

It’s about time we all admit that the popcorn button has failed us.

It used to be that making popcorn at home was a difficult endeavor.  You had two options; invest in a machine that looked like a miniature city from a Buck Rogers episode or Jiffy Pop.  The late 70’s were a bleak time for both finances and the 25th century, so most families took the second option; which also involved mom risking an extremity while holding the foil pan over an open burner.

Then along came the microwave… and microwave popcorn.
